New Hicham Alaoui Fellowship Fund

March 1, 2023

The Weatherhead Center for International Affairs is pleased to announce the Hicham Alaoui Fellowship Fund, made possible by a generous gift from Advisory Committee member Prince Moulay Hicham Ben Abdallah Alaoui of Morocco. The fund will support postdoctoral research on the Middle East/North Africa region, with a particular focus on climate change, for three one-year terms. Postdoctoral fellows will be selected through the Weatherhead Scholars Program application process, with a yearly deadline of November 1 of the preceding academic year.

Dr. Hicham Alaoui, a staunch defender of human rights, democratic reform, and social movements, founded the Hicham Alaoui Foundation in 2009, a nonprofit private foundation supporting social science research on the Arab world at leading global universities, among other initiatives. In 2016–2018, Dr. Alaoui participated in the Weatherhead Fellows Program (now the Weatherhead Scholars Program). He earned his PhD at the University of Oxford, specializing in religion and democracy in the Middle East.

A Message to the WCFIA Community about the Comaroff Letter

February 14, 2022

Dear members of the Weatherhead Center community:

The past week has been very difficult for our WCFIA community. A group of 38 Harvard faculty members (including 22 WCFIA affiliates) issued an open letter, which questioned the University’s misconduct investigations of and sanctions against John Comaroff, an anthropology professor and a WCFIA faculty associate. A few days later, three anthropology graduate students filed a lawsuit against Harvard, charging that the University willfully ignored years of Comaroff’s sexual harassment. A group of 73 Harvard faculty members (...

We aim to focus on the most important questions facing societies across the globe.

This year, we are faced with the enormous challenge of supporting research as we start to emerge from a global pandemic. How do we do this? We are a large Center: our affiliates include more than 230 Harvard Faculty Associates and over 150 graduate and undergraduate students, visiting scholars, fellows, and postdoctoral researchers. WCFIA Letter in Support of Our Students in Response to the ICE Press Release

July 9, 2020
Dear Members of the Weatherhead Community,

Earlier this week, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) issued unexpected and disheartening guidance that international students would be required to return home if their colleges and universities offered online-only courses this fall.

These guidelines risk public health by pressuring universities to hold additional in-person classes, even in the case of a potential surge in COVID-19 cases, if they want their international students to remain in the US. The guidelines also seek to limit the global reach and... Read more about WCFIA Letter in Support of Our Students in Response to the ICE Press Release

2019–2020 Welcome Message from Acting Director Melani Cammett

August 23, 2019

Image of Melani CammettWelcome to the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University. Our community of scholars researches complex international, transnational, global, and comparative topics at the frontier of the social sciences. We aim to focus on the most important questions facing societies across the globe.

It is a challenge to focus the research energy of a community that spans nine of Harvard’s thirteen schools, but our six ongoing Weatherhead Research Clusters offer broad areas for shared study. The clusters focus on international security; the reconfiguration of regions in a multipolar world; religion in public life in Africa and the African diaspora; challenges to democracy; global transformations; and comparative inequality and inclusion. In addition, we continue to support our ongoing Weatherhead Initiative on Afro-Latin American studies.... Read more about 2019–2020 Welcome Message from Acting Director Melani Cammett

Update on Jorge Dominguez: From Director Michele Lamont

May 10, 2019

We welcome yesterday’s news from Dean Gay about sanctions against Jorge Domínguez.

Her decision will give much-needed relief to all those affected by the case and send a strong signal about what the University considers standard rules of collective living across our academic community.

The Weatherhead Center for International Affairs will continue to take appropriate steps to foster a positive climate where all students, staff, and faculty are fully respected as human beings. We continue to invite your thoughts and reactions concerning how to improve our community, and how to create a more inclusive culture that allows everyone to do their best work and flourish.

Finally, I want to remind you of the resources available should you experience or witness sexual or gender-based harassment. They include the FAS Title IX Coordinators, the University Title IX Office, the Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response, Harvard University Counseling and Mental Health Services, the Harvard Chaplains, and the Employee Assistance Program. If you are perplexed about steps to take, the ombudsman’s office is an important resource and one that will help you determine the appropriate course of action.

Best regards,
Michèle Lamont
