Honorary Doctorate Awarded to Panagiotis Roilos

Congratulations to Faculty Associate Panagiotis Roilos, George Seferis Professor of Modern Greek Studies, was presented with an honorary doctorate from Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. Panteion is one of the most prestigious universities devoted to social and political sciences in Europe, and has awarded around sixty honorary degrees in its almost one-century history. Roilos, presented with the award on January 22, 2018, is one of the youngest honorees so far. 

Sunil Amrith and Betsy Levy Paluck Named 2017 MacArthur Foundation Fellows

Faculty Associate and Harvard Academy Senior Scholar Sunil Amrith, Mehra Family Professor of South Asian Studies and professor of history, was named a 2017 MacArthur Foundation Fellow. Also in the class of 24 talented and creative individuals is former Harvard Academy Scholar Betsy Levy Paluck, professor of psychology and public affairs at Yale University. The MacArthur Foundation awards $625,000 in an unrestricted fellowship to each recipient. Congratulations to Professors Amrith and Paluck! Faculty Associate Candelaria Garay Wins Dahl Award

Congratulations to Weatherhead Center Faculty Associate Candelaria Garay, assistant professor of public policy at Harvard Kennedy School, on winning the 2017 Robert A. Dahl Award. The award is given annually to non-ladder and junior tenure-track faculty whose scholarship includes books, papers, reports, and articles on the subject of democracy. Garay's research interests include Latin American politics, social policy, political parties, and social movements. Her recent book, Social Policy Expansion in Latin America (2016), is available through Cambridge University Press.

Faculty Associate Byron J. Good Wins Lifetime Achievement Award

Byron J. Good, professor of anthropology at Harvard University and professor of medical anthropology at Harvard Medical School, won the 2017 Society for Psychological Anthropology Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is given by the American Anthropological Association every year. The award "honors career-long contributions to psychological anthropology that have substantially influenced the field and its development." 

WCFIA Faculty Associate and Former Director Joseph Nye, Jr., Wins Book Award

Faculty Associate Joseph S. Nye, Jr., Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor at Harvard Kennedy School, was awarded the Global Policy Book Award recently for his 2015 book, Is the American Century Over? The award, given by the Institute for Leadership Studies at Loyola Marymount University, recognizes books that make a profound impact on the discussion of global politics. 

Faculty Associate Emeritus Herbert C. Kelman Awarded National Order of Merit

Herbert C. Kelman, Richard Clarke Cabot Professor of Social Ethics, Emeritus, at Harvard University, was recently presented with the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria. According to the Herbert C. Kelman Institute for Interactive Conflict Transformation, the prize "recognizes Kelman's pioneering role in contemporary peace research and his extraordinary intellectual achievements." 

Faculty Associate Maya Jasanoff Wins Windham-Campbell Prize

Congratulations to WCFIA Faculty Associate Maya Jasanoff, Coolidge Professor of History at Harvard University, on winning the 2017 Windham-Campbell Prize. The prize, given by Yale University, was awarded to eight recipients honored for their literary achievement or promise. Jasanoff is the author of two award-winning works of nonfiction, and has a forthcoming book called The Dawn Watch: Joseph Conrad in a Global World, to be published in November 2017.

Weatherhead Center Director Michèle Lamont Awarded Erasmus Prize 2017

PRESS RELEASE

The Weatherhead Center for International Affairs is delighted to announce that its Director, Michèle Lamont, has been awarded the 2017 Erasmus Prize. One of Europe’s most illustrious recognitions, the prize honors individual or group contributions to European culture, society or social science. The prize is named after Desiderius Erasmus, the Dutch Renaissance humanist, and the awards ceremony will be held in November at the Royal Palace of Amsterdam. It comes with an award of 150,000 Euros.

Faculty Associate Michael Reich Receives Lifetime Service Award for Research

Michael Reich, Taro Takemi Professor of International Health Policy at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, has received a Lifetime Service award. Reich was given the award for his work—spanning more than four decades—in the field of health policy and systems research. The award is given by the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (AHPSE) and Health Systems Global (HSG).

 

WCFIA Faculty Associate Calestous Juma Receives 2017 Breakthrough Paradigm Award

Calestous Juma, Professor of the Practice of International Development at Harvard Kennedy School, was recently named a recipient of the 2017 Breakthrough Paradigm Award. The award, given by the Breakthrough Institute, "recognizes accomplishment and leadership in the effort to make the future secure, free, prosperous, and fulfilling for all the world’s inhabitants on an ecologically vibrant planet." Juma's groundbreaking research in biotechnology and innovation solidifies his position as a thought leader in the fields of science and technology. He will accept this award next summer at the Breakthrough Dialogue, a two-day conference devoted to democracy in the Anthropocene. 

Faculty Associate Tamar Herzog Awarded James A. Rawley Prize

Tamar Herzog, Monroe Gutman Professor of Latin American Affairs and Radcliffe Alumnae Professor, was awarded the 2016 James A. Rawley Prize for her book, Frontiers of Possession: Spain and Portugal in Europe and the Americas (Harvard University Press, 2015). The award, given by the American Historical Association, goes to the best book that explores the integration of Atlantic worlds before the twentieth century. 

WCFIA Faculty Associate Susan J. Pharr Wins the Japan Foundation Award

Faculty Associate and director of the Program on U.S.-Japan Relations Susan J. Pharr, also the Edwin O. Reischauer Professor of Japanese Politics at Harvard University, was awarded a 2016 Japan Foundation Award for her lifetime of work in promoting international mutual understanding, especially between Japan and the United States. Pharr is a widely recognized leader in her field, and holds deep insight into Japanese politics through a comparative politics lens. Every year the Japan Foundation awards individuals and organizations that have helped promote understanding and friendship between Japan and other countries.
