Abstract:

Latin America has experienced multiple episodes of democratic backsliding in recent years. This panel will examine two of the most recent episodes: Bolivia and El Salvador. Panelists will explore how much backsliding has occurred in each country, why it occurred, and what the prospects are for democratic recovery. Robert Kaufman, who has written extensively on issues of democratic backsliding, will serve as discussant.
