Abstract:

The struggle between the Nigerian government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) members has now entered its eighth month, with no signs of ending.  ASUU leaders call for better learning conditions at the tertiary institutions and better remuneration, while the government says that it cannot afford it and that the universities are mismanaged.  Nigerian students, meanwhile, are protesting the closure of campuses from the strike, while ASUU condemns the lack of sincerity on the part of the government for refusing to honor past agreements. Government registration of two new unions, in a bid to break the spirit of ASUU, has further exacerbated the issue.

Ehi Braimah, Editor-in-Chief of the Naija Times, has followed the ASUU strike closely and will review these key issues at stake in the crisis and the positions of the government, ASUU, and student leaders.  He will also examine efforts by the House of Representatives to intervene and discuss the impact of the approval of new federal and private universities by the government.
