Abstract:

In this presentation, I will outline an inductive approach for studying events, which enables cross-national and long-term event investigations. The central premise of the approach is to follow the direct associations that actors make with an event as openly as possible. I will then apply the approach to the case of 9/11 in the American, French, and Dutch public spheres (2001-2021), by using both qualitative and quantitave text analysis methods. From this case study I formulate various empirical and theoretical lessons, that might work for event meaning-making processes more generally.
