The starting point of the workshop centers on the observation that levels of extreme poverty in the Middle East and North Africa are an order of magnitude lower than in any other developing region. The workshop has two main analytical goals: First, we aim to interrogate the quality of the data, asking whether the MENA poverty gap is indeed credible. Second, if the data are indeed reliable—at least in relative terms: what explains the lower average poverty rate in the Middle East in comparison with other developing regions?
